Baron Szentkereszty Stephanie of Zagon founded the Elizabeth Girls' Orphanage in 1872. Before 1873 the building was a major's quarters. In 1874 it took the name of Elisabeth. During the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence, there was an ammunition factory on the site of the present children's home, with 52 workers producing 40-80 pounds of gunpowder a day for G\u00e1bor \u00c1ron's cannons.
